Add us as a preferred source on Google »In the next few hours, we'll finally know who the tenth President of Ireland will be.
They'll be following in the footsteps of Douglas Hyde, Seán T O'Kelly, Éamon de Valera, Erskine Childers, Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, Patrick Hillery, Mary Robinson; Mary McAleese and Michael D Higgins.
3.6 million people were eligible to vote but just how many actually turned out to vote has been a big talking point of the election, reports RTE News.
While former Dublin GAA manager, Jim Gavin's name remained on the ballot, he withdrew from the race at the beginning of this month.
The race is now strictly between Heather Humphrey's and Catherine Connolly.
The count began at around 9am this morning with boxes across the country being opened.
Counting has now began at the 32 centres covering the 43 Dáil constituencies.
Judging from how past elections have gone, we can expect to have the first result by mid-afternoon and the national count to be confirmed in early evening.
In the last two presidential elections, we have had confirmation of the new president at 7.35pm and 9pm.
