Dublin Fire Brigade has launched an investigation into an incident in which a child became trapped inside an ambulance while on the way to Temple Street.

A fire engine had to be dispatched to rescue the child, their parent and a paramedic who were stuck inside the vehicle.

It’s reported that it took 40 minutes to free the occupants with efforts hampered by the fact that the emergency exit didn’t work and a power failure caused the doors in the ambulance to lock.

The child had been suffering from an anaphylactic reaction and was safely transferred to hospital and later discharged before returning home.

A spokesperson for the fire brigade said that they were taking the incident very seriously and that it was an isolated event.

“This includes making an enquiry with the manufacturer of the ambulance to identify what might have caused the ambulance to break down, and to safeguard against the potential for a similar incident taking place again in another ambulance of that make” they said.

“We are not in a position to make any additional comment at this juncture, pending the outcome of the investigation”.
