It’s another big day for equal rights in Ireland, as President Michael D. Higgins has singed the Marriage Equality Bill into law.
A statement from the President’s office issued this evening read:
“President Michael D. Higgins this evening signed the Thirty-fourth Amendment of the Constitution (Marriage Equality) Bill 2015 at Áras an Uachtaráin.”

The move comes after Ireland made history on May 22nd, becoming the first country in the world to introduce same sex marriage by popular vote.

The bill is now expected to be passed through the Dáil immediately following the summer recess, which ends on September 22nd. Once that step has taken place, the first same sex marriages can take place in Ireland.
