Man and woman die in drowning accident at Ballybunion beach

The incident happened on Thursday evening.

A man and woman have tragically died in Co. Kerry after a tragic drowning accident.

The siblings, aged 50 and 62, were swimming at Ballybunion beach on Thursday evening.

Emergency services were alerted at around 6 pm.

They rushed to the Co. Kerry beach after the alarm was raised.

It is believed both the man and woman got into difficulty in the water.

According to reports, a lifeguard performed CPR on one of them. However, the other was missing for quite some time.

The Sun reports that the couple may have been in Kerry on holiday.

Emergency services managed to remove them both from the water, but they were both pronounced dead a short time later.

Gardaí confirmed their bodies have been removed from the scene by ambulance. Postmortems will take place in due course.

Their bodies were taken to University Hospital Kerry earlier this evening.

Gardaí also stated that a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Following their tragic deaths, Gardaí issued a statement:

“At approximately 6pm this evening, Thursday 4 August 2022, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted after two people, aged in their 50s, got into difficulty in the water at Ballybunion beach, Co. Kerry.

“They were taken from the water and pronounced dead a short time later.

“The bodies of both have been removed from the scene by ambulance to the mortuary in University Hospital Kerry. A file will be prepared for the Coroner.”

It’s believed that the pair weren’t local to the area and may have been there on holiday.
