“If you are going to book, make sure that it is cancellable.”

Tánaiste Leo Vardakar has said he thinks it will be possible for people to go on holiday within Ireland this summer and revealed he has booked a holiday in Sligo for August.

Varadkar said the steps being taken at the moment combined with the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccines and weather means there’s a “very good chance” we’ll be able to have home holidays similar to last summer.

Speaking on 2FM Breakfast with Doireann & Eoghan on Thursday morning, he said the virus had “torn up our plans so many times” that you never know but said he thinks you will be able to get around the country.

“I have booked my home holiday for August,” Varadkar said when asked if he had booked a holiday.

“[At] Sligo, I’d hoped to go to a beach somewhere, not going to happen, well it will be a beach in Sligo, but I’d hoped to get somewhere sunny and warm.

“If you are going to book, make sure that it is cancellable.”

He added: “I think because of the vaccine and because of the change in the weather and because of what everyone is doing to get the virus down you know I think there is a very good chance that this summer we will be able to have home holidays a bit like we did last summer, you know.

“I think we will be able to have beers outdoors with friends this summer and get around the country but you just never know because this virus has torn up our plans so many times.”
