Liar, liar, pants on fire: New research proves we’re a nation of fibbers

Orlaith Condon

Nearly half of us believe telling white lies is totally acceptable behaviour.

Yes, we’re a nation of fibbers, and this latest survey proves just that.

According to a survey conducted by Four Star Pizza, 37 percent of us have lied to our partners in the last week alone with 32 percent opting to tell an untruth to get out of trouble and 28 percent saying they did to protect the feelings of the partner.

This Sunday marks International Honesty Day, however it seems that not many of us are embracing the honest lifestyle.

The survey found that a whopping 59 percent of us are guilty of telling lies in the workplace, and 41 percent of us say it’s to explain why we’re late.

We’re most guilty of telling lies to our parents, with 52 percent of us admitting to have done so.

Four Star surveyed over 1,000 people and the results revealed that one in four of us have told blatant lies on our social media platforms.

39 percent of Irish women are guilty of lying about their weight and 25 percent of us have lied to new partners about how many previous sexual partners we’ve had.

“It’s great to see we are still a nation of chancers,” said Brian Clarke from Four Star Pizza. “For the most part white lies are fairly harmless and a world of complete honesty could become quite a boring place.

Leading body language expert and ‘human lie-detector’ Darren Stanton said of the research:

“It’s no surprise that the little white lie is as common as ever, however we know from a moral perspective that bigger mistruths are less acceptable, something we’re told over and over again as children.”
