German supermarket chain Lidl is closing its doors early this weekend as a way of thanking its staff for all their “hard work” during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Stores are set to close an hour earlier on Sunday, October 17th, giving staff a “national staff recognition event.”

Announcing the news on their social media accounts, Lidl was sure to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.

“Please note that our stores will be closing at 8pm this Sunday 17th October,” the supermarket wrote.

“This is to allow us hold a national staff recognition event to say thank you to our amazing teams for their continued hard work!

“Thanks for your understanding, we apologise for any inconvenience.”

Lidl usually opens until 9pm on a Sunday, with the store open until 10pm during the other says of the week.

Their comments were instantly filled with praise for the company, with shoppers delighted for the staff’s work to be recognised.

One said: “Whatever you’re doing, it’s working. Your staff are brilliant. Keep it up.”

Another wrote: “That’s fantastic, well done.”
