‘Live rat’ and ‘many flies’ among reasons for 13 food business closure orders last month

A “live rat” and “many flies” are among the reasons for the 13 food business closure orders served last month.

The businesses in Dublin, Clare, Cork, Meath, and Tipperary were issued the notices by the Food Safety Authority Ireland (FSAI) in July for being in breach of food safety regulations.

Today, the FSAI released the reasons behind the closure orders calling the list “alarming.”

“Mouse infestation,” a “foul smell,” and “rodent droppings” were also among the reasons for closure notices.

Dr Pamela Byrne, chief executive for FSAI, said that the list shows that many food workers have had no basic training in food and hygiene management.

There is absolutely no excuse for careless practices,” she said. “Staff must be properly trained in food safety and hygiene and it is also imperative that an effective pest control system is in place.”

Under the FSAI Act, 1998, the businesses closed were:

  • Shannon Heritage at Bunratty Folk Park, trading as Bakery (Order issued: 13 July, and lifted: 18 July), Bunratty Castle & Folk Park Bunratty, Clare
  • Neree Mbala (Order issued: 12 July) 10a Base Enterprise Centre Damastown Road Mulhuddart, Dublin 15
  • Roberto’s (Closed area: food storage and potato peeling area at the rear of the premises) (Order issued: 5 July, and lifted: 18 July), 12 Ranelagh, Dublin 6
  • Supervalu (Closed area: Loose/open food areas – deli, fish counter, butchery counter, bakery, salad bar, shop floor hot counter, fruit & veg) (Order issued: 11 July, and lifted: 13 July), Walkinstown Road Dublin 12

The EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations 2010 applied to:
