A plane is understood to have crashed this afternoon in the Ukraine, with almost 300 people on board.

Early reports are claiming that the Malaysian Airlines flight was brought down by “a ground-to-air missile” near the Russian border.

The flight, believed to be number MH17, departed from Amsterdam at 12.14am local time and was travelling to Kuala Lumpur at the time of the crash.

There were 295 people on board and according to Sky News, the plane came down in an area where there has been recent heavy fighting amid continuing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
