It’s emerged that the man at the centre of a Dublin rape case was out on bail when the assault took place.

The 24-year-old man is suspected of raping an 18-year-old Spanish student in Dublin at the weekend.

It’s understood that she had met him on the Liffey boardwalk last Saturday afternoon and that the man had offered to take her to the beach as she was interested in photography.

The man took the woman on a convoluted route towards the Point Village, across the river back to the south side and to a tent near Pigeon House Road in Ringsend where she says she was falsely imprisoned and repeatedly assaulted.

It’s thought the man took this route as his bail conditions forbade him from being in certain areas of the city centre.

He had been facing charges including criminal damage, possession of drugs, trespassing and public order offences, reports the Irish Independent.

The woman managed to escape and raise the alarm once the man had fallen asleep a few hours later.

Detectives investigating the incident believe that the man had charmed the woman into coming with him with the intention of turning on her, according to the Irish Times.

The man was arrested on Monday afternoon but was released 24 hours later after the Gardaí found insufficient evidence to charge him.

Gardaí are still awaiting the outcome of forensic tests and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
