Breaking news.

A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Ashling Murphy.

Gardaí announced this afternoon that a man in his 30s had been arrested in connection with the death. Ashling was attacked and killed in Tullamore last week, on Wednesday.

A statement reads:

“Gardaí investigating the fatal assault on Ashling Murphy that occurred at approximately 4pm on Wednesday, 12th January, 2022, along the canal bank at Cappincur, Tullamore, County Offaly have arrested a male in his 30s on suspicion of murder.

“The male is now detained in Tullamore Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time.”

This news comes following the arrest of another male in his 40s last week. That man was later released by Gardaí after it was determined that he was no longer a person of interest.

Gardaí said this week that they were hoping to speak to a man who was in hospital regarding the murder.

23-year-old Ashling was laid to rest today in Co. Offaly. The service took place in St Brigid’s Church in Mountbolus, Co. Offaly on Tuesday morning.

The schoolteacher was laid to rest in Lowertown cemetery following the service.
