Man charged in connection with Ashling Murphy’s murder

He has been charged.

A man has been charged in connection with the murder of Ashling Murphy last Wednesday.

The man is aged in his 30s and was arrested on Tuesday, January 18th. He is due to sit a special sitting of Tullamore District Court later this evening.

The second man that was arrested in connection with the murder has been released without charge.

A file is now being prepared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The man was escorted to the back of the station by Gardaí to be processed after questioning.

According to Independent.ie, a senior garda gave the approval to take the man’s fingerprints, palm prints and DNA before formal questioning began by local detectives and officers from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NBCI).

He was brought from St James’ Hospital in Dublin to Tullamore Garda Station after his arrest yesterday where he had been treated for injuries since last Thursday.

In a statement this evening, the gardaí said: “Gardaí investigating the fatal assault on Ashling Murphy on Wednesday 12th January 2022 have charged the man, aged in his 30s, who was arrested yesterday, Tuesday 18th January 2022.

“He is due to appear before a special sitting of Tullamore District Court this evening, Wednesday 19th January 2022 at 8.15pm.”
