A man has been charged with the murder of his mother, Elzbieta Piotrowska, in Co Louth.
The 57-year-old's body was discovered in her Ardee home on Tuesday morning. She had suffered brutal injuries after being attacked with an axe.
RTE reports that Tomasz Piotrowski has since been charged with the murder of his mother.
The 32-year-old, who also lived in Ardee, was arrested in connection with the death on Tuesday.
He had fled the scene following the attack and was eventually arrested at another location.
He made no comment when he was charged with the murder. His solicitor has expressed concern regarding his client's mental health.
Piotrowska's husband was in work at the time of the attack. Her daughter was in Poland.
A post-mortem was carried out yesterday.
