A man has reportedly been shot by police after he stabbed a number of people in the city of Turku, Finland.

The incident took place in the city’s Puutori-Market Square area this afternoon, where witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing a man lying on the ground.

The suspected attacker was shot in the leg and taken into custody, according to The BBC.

‘Several people stabbed in central Turku. People are requested to avoid the city centre,’ tweeted the South-West Finland police earlier.

As yet there is no official confirmation of the extent of the casualties or the number of victims.

Earlier today, Finland’s Security Intelligence Service (Supo) said it would not raise the country’s terror threat level from ‘elevated’ following yesterday’s attack in Barcelona, reports Finnish broadcaster YLE.

“At the moment we do not see a change which would make it necessary for us to change our overall assessment,” said Pekka Hiltunen, a research specialist with Supo.
