Met Éireann issues status yellow snow-ice warning for 10 counties

Paul Moore

It’s about to get chilly.

With hail, scattered thunderstorms, and snow being predicted this week for parts of Ireland, Met Éireann has now confirmed that a status yellow snow-ice warning has been issued for 10 counties.

The warning is in place for Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford and Louth; it was issued at 11am on 1 April, comes into effect at 12.01am on Tuesday and is valid until 12pm on 3 April.

Met Éireann has forecast that “falls of hail and sleet will occur with snow accumulations mainly on high ground”.

Lying snow in places below 250 metres and icy patches are also expected.

It appears that the worst of the conditions will arrive on Monday evening with “showers becoming heavy, frequent and wintry – especially across central, northern and western areas with the risk of hail and scattered thunderstorms”.

Falls of snow are possible on high ground, with lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees, as well as widespread sharp frost and icy patches.

Tuesday will also see falls of hail and snow – especially over high ground, while there is also a risk of thunder in places.

The full forecast can be found here.

Take care if you’re out and about.
