Sharing his annual Christmas memo to YouTube, the President of Ireland posed alongside his adorable dogs, Brod and Sioda while sharing a few thoughts and reminders for the festive period.

“As President of Ireland may I send you my warmest wishes for a peaceful and a happy Christmas and new year,” he began by saying.

Continuing, the president touched on some important topics, noting that Christmas isn’t a time of joy for everyone, the president reminded people to think of those who are experiencing loss or grieving during this time.

Michael D also touched on the topic of climate change, recognising that 2019 was a turning point and a moment of realisation that we need to do more to protect our planet.

“It was uplifting to witness our younger generation demonstrate their willingness to play their part in the collective action that is necessary” he added.

Michael D also spoke about migrants in search of a better life and urged people to keep an eye out for those who might need help this Christmas.

As always, the President of Ireland ended on an uplifting note, speaking about leaving the dark days of 2019 for the brighter ones of 2020, Michael D Higgins said:

“So, as we leave behind the dark days of mid-winter, and move towards a season of new beginnings and new possibilities, let us do so with courage and a real will to walk in solidarity with those who are vulnerable in Ireland and across the world.

“It is that solidarity that has always given strength to the beating heart of our society, seeking to draw from all that is best about our Irishness and thus helping us to meet the challenges of the complex world in which we live.

“I wish each and every one of you a peaceful and happy Christmas and a new year of hope and possibility.”
