Michaella McCollum, from Dungannon in Co. Tyrone has been released from prison in Peru.

According to RTÉ, McCollum, who was jailed for smuggling cocaine from Lima to Madrid is being freed under new legislation that allows foreign prisoners to be released on the condition they have served a third of their prison sentence.

A Peruvian court will decide whether she is allowed to return to Northern Ireland immediately or have to spend more time in the country.

According to The Belfast Telegraph, McCollum claimed she and Scotswoman Melissa Reid were working in Ibiza when they  they were forced to board a flight from Peru with 24lb of cocaine in food packets hidden inside their luggage, being caught in August 2013.

The repatriation of McCollum to Northern Ireland was approved by Stormont’s justice minister in January of last year but, she had remained in prison.
