The Mortal Instruments‘ Godfrey Gao has died aged 35.

The Taiwan-born actor played Magnus Bane in the 2013 film, The Moral Instruments: City of Bones. He is reported to have collapsed while filming for a Chinese variety show called Chase Me.

According to BBC News, the show sees teams competing to win a race. Producers told the news outlet that the actor fell and lost consciousness while filming an event earlier this week.

He is said to have collapsed midway through filming on Wednesday, before passing away in hospital.

“Guest participant Godfrey suddenly collapsed to the ground while running. The programme’s on-site paramedics began lifesaving measures immediately and urgently transported him to the hospital,” the management behind the show said.

“After two hours of all-out efforts to save him, the hospital [said] he had suffered a sudden cardiac death.”

Friends and fans have taken to social media to share tributes to the actor.

Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Remi Hii said that he was “beyond devastated” to hear about Mr. Gao’s death.

“This is a loss to us as a community as asian artists and it’s fair to say it will never be the same without him,” he wrote on Twitter.
