Heartbreaking.

A young mum has died after she fell down the stairs at a subway station in New York City while carrying her one-year-old daughter’s pram.

The The Washington Post report that 22-year-old Malaysia Goodson was found unconscious and unresponsive on the platform of 7th Avenue Station at 53rd Street on Monday evening.

Lt. Paul Ng, a spokesman for the New York Police Department, told the mum had been carrying her daughter in her arms when she fell.

Ms Goodson was taken to Mount Sinai West hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Her daughter was found and was treated at the scene. She was not seriously injured and is said to currently be with family.

Police have said that it is not clear if Ms Goodson passed away due to the fall, or if she suffered from a medical condition. The city’s medical examiner will determine the cause of her death.

Shams Tarek, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA), said it was a “heartbreaking tragedy”. He added that the transport agency will work with the authorities during their investigation.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Twitter:

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that never should have happened.

“The subway system is not accessible for everyone and that’s an environment the MTA should not allow.”
