Emma Mhic Mhathúna has died, aged 37.

Horrifically sad news today as Emma Mhic Mhathúna, one of the women at the centre of the cervical cancer scandal, has passed away.

Emma died in hospital today in Kerry having being admitted to University Hospital Kerry earlier in the week.

A statement from Emma’s family obtained by RTÉ said that she died in the “knowledge that she had helped to shine a light on important issues which affected not just her own life, but the lives of many others”.

Emma had terminal cancer and told of how she had been given incorrect information telling her that her smear tests were clear in 2010 and again in 2013.

Ms Mhic Mhathúna, previously settled her case against the Health Service Executive and a US lab for €7.5 million but told of how it didn’t make any difference and she fought for the money so that her children would be taken care of.

Speaking on RTE Radio One’s Today With Miriam O’Callaghan at the time, Emma said:

“The €7.5 million doesn’t make any difference to me.

“I just went in there and I wasn’t taking any nonsense because I wanted my children taken care of – every mouthguard and football boot adds up.”

Our thoughts are with Emma’s family at this devastating time.
