NASA has captured an aerial shot of Ireland’s gorse fires

Laura Holland

This is incredible, yet very scary.

The good weather we’ve been having recently has resulted in multiple gorse fires across the country.

There have been different outbreaks of the fires, affecting parts of Dublin, Donegal and in the midlands. While we’ve been hearing about it here in Ireland, Nasa has been monitoring it from space.

They managed to capture an aerial shot of our fair isle and have highlighted six different gorse fires which were burning at the same time.

They picture shows the entire country with all the gorse fires highlighted with red marks. They include one in Donegal, north of Buncrana, one in Sligo near Manorhamilton, one along the Fermanagh/Monaghan border, another in Laois and one in the Wicklow Mountains.

They’ve said:

“This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite on May 08, 2017. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands, are outlined in red.”

NASA collaborated with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue and the Irish Farmers Journal for the photo.
