Under new legislation being considered by Minster for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross, unaccompanied learner drivers may have their cars seized. According to the Irish Independent, Minster Ross is currently considering a change in the current law following complaints from road safety groups over the numbers of accidents involving learner drivers. Currently, the punishment for a driver on a learner permit driving without being accompanied by a qualified person is two penalty points and a fixed fine. This can be put up to four penalty points upon conviction. Speaking in the Dáil, Ross spoke about a possible tweak to the current law already in place.
