Here are the odds that it will actually snow on Christmas day

Ellen Fitzpatrick

Don’t get your hopes up.

People across the country every year hope for one thing, for it to snow on Christmas day.

While it is a rarity to actually happen, it’s never impossible but looking at the forecast for this year, we wouldn’t hold our breath.

Punters in Ireland are placing their bets to see whether it really will be a white Christmas this, with the latest odds from Ladbrokes seeing a rise in support for snow on December 25th.

As of now, it is only 6/4 that it will snow anywhere in Ireland on Christmas Day and according to the bookies, the odds are “under pressure.”

Dublin and Belfast have both been written up at 5/1 to experience some snow on the big day, with Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes telling the Irish Mirror: “Since The Late Late Toy Show last Friday, it seems punters are very much in the festive spirit.

“So much so, we have been snowed under with bets on a white Christmas and the odds suggest punters could get their wish.”

But from Met Eireann’s prediction, we could be very disappointed on Christmas and in the lead up to the holidays.

While there is set to be less rainfall than expected, Met Eireann says: “Looking further ahead to week 4, uncertainty in the forecast grows.

“Again, there is little signal in the way of dominant pressure patterns establishing, though rainfall amounts are expected to be lower than normal for the time of year.”
