One hundred new jobs announced for Galway town

Emma lahiffe

A great start to the week in Galway.

Medical devices company Surmodics is to create 100 jobs in Ballinasloe over the next five years.

The US company will invest €9.5 million in research and development, and spend €7 million upgrading the Ballinasloe facility.

Surmodics acquired the Ballinasloe-based Creagh Medical in 2015 and currently employs 32 people at the facility.

The company operates in two areas of the life sciences industry; medical devices and in vitro diagnostics.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Mary Mitchell O’Connor said the investment is “a vote of confidence in the skilled Irish workforce”.

“100 jobs for Galway is great news as one of my priorities as Minister is to ensure employment growth across the regions. Only a strong economy supporting people at work can pay for services needed to create a fair society. This will ensure a more inclusive prosperity for all. I wish Surmodics and their workforce the very best for the future.”

Roscommon-Galway TD, Denis Naughten welcomed the news:

“The creation of 100 jobs in Ballinasloe is the equivalent of 1,000 jobs for Galway City, but what is far more significant is the fact that these jobs are in the medical device sector which allows the town of Ballinasloe to attract additional investment from the two existing medical device hubs in Athlone and Galway.”
