Actress Park So-dam has revealed that she has been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer.

The 30-year-old, who starred in the Oscar-winning film Parasite, has undergone surgery and is recovering from the procedure.

She has had to pull out of the press tour for her upcoming film, Special Cargo, so she can take time to rest – something that has left her feeling “very disappointed”.

Her management company, ArtistCompany, said in a statement:

‘The company would like to once again thank all the people for showing support for Special Delivery and actress Park So-dam, as well as the actors and crew of Special Delivery overcoming this difficult time together.

“Park So-dam will focus on her recovery so that she can see you all healthy in the future, and ArtistCompany will also do our best to help the actor recover her health.”

Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common thyroid cancer, with roughly 80% of all thyroid cancer cases being this type. It is most common in people under 40 and usually occurs more often in women.

It affects more than 250 people in Ireland each year.

Park enjoyed a successful acting career in South Korea before shooting to global fame following the success of black comedy Parasite, which earned $259 million at the box office and won four Oscars in 2020, including one for Best Picture.

Her upcoming film Special Cargo is set for release in January 2022.
