Part of the gate at Dachau concentration camp bearing the infamous Nazi motto ‘Work Sets You Free’ has been stolen during the night.
Officials reported the section of gate, measuring 190 by 95 centimetres (75 by 37 inches), missing early on Sunday morning in the camp located close to Munich.
Officials said the thieves would have had to climb over another gate to reach it during the night, stealing the gate from the now memorial site for Holocaust victims
Police confirmed they have found no leads in the immediate vicinity of the camp, appealing to the public to come forward if they have any information or noticed suspicious behaviour around the gate.
Dachau was the first concentration camp established under Nazi rule, in 1933. It is believed more than 40,000 prisoners died there before it was liberated by US forces on April 29th, 1945.
