Soon, you might be able to nip down to your local shop if you need to pay a court fine thanks to a new service that has been proposed.
Fines for offences, such as drunk and disorderly convictions and other offences, may soon be payable in a variety of shops across the country as a result of a new plan by the Court Service.
The service is looking for 480 shops around the country to get on board with the new system, which could have in the region of €93,000 worth of fines in the course of a year.
If implemented, the new system will require five separate retail outlets to accept the payment for every court in the country. Therefore in Dublin alone, there will need to be 55 retailers in place who accept the payment of fines in order to meet this criteria.
Last year, the Court Service collected over €13.75 million in fines – with fines for motoring accounting for almost half of that.
