Did the president of Brazil just accuse Leonardo DiCaprio of starting the Amazon fires?

What?

A controversial take on the subject, to say the least.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has accused actor Leonardo DiCaprio of funding deliberate destruction of the Amazon rainforest earlier this year.

The controversial president took aim at DiCaprio, seemingly suggesting he was responsible for the Amazon fires that destroyed the rainforest.

“Leonardo DiCaprio, dammit, you’re collaborating with the burning of the Amazon,” Bolsonaro said, accusing the actor of being part of an international “campaign against Brazil”.

Bolsonaro made the comments in a facebook live stream earlier this week, while The Guardian have reported that he made similar comments to a group of supporters in Brazil, saying: “This Leonardo DiCaprio’s a cool guy, isn’t he? Giving money for the Amazon to be torched.”

He had no evidence to back up either of these points, and they are made even more confusing when you remember that Leonardo DiCaprio donated $5 million to help save the Amazon, when the fires were at their worst.

Bolsonaro had recently suggested that the fires could have potentially been started by nonprofit organizations who are suffering from lack of funding, in an attempt to “generate negative attention against me and against the Brazilian government.”
