Prince Charles and Camilla to begin official tour of Ireland today

Anna O'Rourke

Prince of Wales Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will arrive in Dublin today for a three-day state visit.

The royal couple will first head to Áras an Uachtaráin to meet with President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina. The couples are set to have dinner together at an Áras for what will be Charles’ fourth official visit to the South.

During the visit they’ll also attend ceremonies at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin to in honour of those who died in the Easter Rising and World War 1, visit the United Nations Training School Ireland at the Curragh Camp and will make a trip to Kilkenny.

There they’ll watch a hurling demonstration and visit the city’s farmers market on the Parade, according to the Kilkenny People.

The visit was made at the request of the British government to showcase the strong connection and friendship between the UK and Ireland, according to Clarence House.

“The Prince and Duchess’s programme will allow them to honour those men and women whose sacrifice in times of conflict shaped our two countries’ shared history; and to celebrate all that we do together to cement peace and secure a prosperous future,” it said in a statement.

The couple landed in Derry yesterday, where they visited the Seamus Heaney HomePlace visitor centre in Bellaghy.
