Rebecca Ferguson to sing at Trump’s inauguration on one special condition

If it really has to happen, please let her do this.

Fair play.

Rebecca Ferguson, who first came to prominence on the X Factor as runner-up on the 2010 show, has reportedly been asked to sing at Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration.

The talented songstress has said she will travel to America for the ceremony on the 20th January but there is one very important proviso.

Taking to Twitter this evening, Rebecca explained that she wishes to sing Strange Fruit, because it is “a song that speaks to all the disregarded and down-trodden black people in the United States”.

Strange Fruit was first recorded by Billie Holiday in 1939 but the lyrics originated from a poem penned by teacher, Abel Meeropol.

Here are Rebecca’s words in full:

“I’ve been asked and this is my answer. If you allow me to sing “strange fruit” a song that has huge historical importance, a song that was blacklisted in the United States for being too controversial.

“A song that speaks to all the disregarded and down trodden black people in the United States. A song that is a reminder of how love is the only thing that will conquer all the hatred in this world, then I will graciously accept your invitation and see you in Washington. Best Rebecca X”.
