Rejoice – Instagram is bringing back the chronological news feed

Ellen Fitzpatrick

Nature is healing.

We can finally get a good nights sleep again, Instagram has finally listened to all our prayers and is bringing back the chronological news feed.

Users have been begging the app for this feature to make a comeback and this year their wishes are set to be granted.

Last month, Meta, the new name for Facebook, announced that plans for the feature to be brought back were in the works but this time, there would be some tweaks.

And this week Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri has shown off the updated feature on his own Instagram and Twitter accounts.

“In the future we’ll have three different feeds in Home,” he said, speaking about the main tab that we currently see our grid and story feeds live.

“The first we’ll call Home — which is the Instagram experience you know today, where we rank content based on how interested we think you are in each and every post, to try to make the most of your time.”

The other options then that will be added will be “Favourites” and “Following”, with the favourites showing content from accounts that the user chooses and the following being the one we’ve all been asking for, the chronological posts from those we follow.

Users will now be able to choose from the three options and can have their display however they want it to look.

For those of us who might prefer the algorithmic curation of their news feed, it won’t be going anywhere.

Mosseri said that the chronological feed would make a comeback during a Senate subcommittee hearing in December and last month said in a Q&A that they were testing out the new ideas.

“We want people to have meaningful control over their experience. We’ve been experimenting with Favorites, a way for you to decide whose posts you want to see higher up, and we’re working on another option to see posts from people you follow in chronological order,” said Instagram in the announcement last month.

“It’s important to me that people feel good about the time that they spend in the app and I think giving people ways to shape Instagram into what’s best for them is one of the best ways to pursue that goal,” the Instagram boss added.
