As RTÉ reports, "intimate" photos of the women have been allegedly shared without their consent on Snapchat. It's understood that the women affected are in the southeast of the country.

In a statement, Gardaí confirmed that they are investigating reports involving the "posting, sharing and uploading of personal images online".

They added: "Any person who is concerned that they have been a victim following the uploading of personal explicit imagery online without their consent, at any time, should contact their local Garda Station."

In Ireland, those who are found guilty of non-consensual distribution will face the penalty of an unlimited fine and up to seven years in prison under the Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offences Bill.
