A rescue operation has been launched to save a boy who fell down a 330 foot well.

The two-year-old was playing at the Totalán mountains in Malaga, Spain yesterday when his parents witnessed him fall down the narrow shaft.

The surface of the hole measures just 25 centimetres in diameter.

El Pais reports that family members heard the boy, named Yulen, crying shortly after the fall, but then he eventually became silent.

Provincial Fire Brigade Francisco Delgado Bonilla began a rescue operation 17 hours ago.

They have so far discovered a bag of items the boy had been carrying, however they have not been able to get a visual on the two-year-old.

Authorities fear that the child may be trapped beneath a layer of compacted soil and dirt.

They are now considering all potential options to rescue the boy, including digging another hole to access the toddler.
