RTÉ presenter Scott de Buitléir has revealed that he has left the station over its handling of the upcoming same-sex marriage referendum.
De Buitléir has presented the channel’s LGBT radio show The Cosmo on RTE Pulse since 2008 but revealed in a statement to his blog today that he has quit his role after being forced to avoid talking about referendum on air.
He added that as RTÉ is keen to ensure that “they cannot be seen as being biased towards either side of the issue”, running an LGBT radio show on the national broadcaster had “become close to impossible”.
“Avoiding the issue would’ve made a mockery of any LGBT programme, which is undoubtedly pro-equality by default. It would’ve also made a mockery of me personally, as an openly gay broadcaster, founder of an LGBT publication (EILE Magazine) and an advocate of equality for all,” he said.
