RTE has defended last night’s Claire Byrne Live referendum special.

The national broadcaster said that the live debate on the upcoming referendum on the eighth amendment was “fair” and that each side was given “equal opportunity to air their arguments.”

The special, which aired last night, saw ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ supporters argue their reasons as to why the eight amendment should be repealed or retained.

The programme was highly criticised online during and following its airing, with many viewers claiming that the audience were disruptive and that many campaigners did not get a chance to speak.

In a statement released today, RTE said:

“While the programme did its best to include as many voices as it could, it was not possible to speak to everyone and it was made clear to every audience member in advance that there was no guarantee they would get to speak on the programme.

“Impartial analysis of Claire Byrne Live Referendum Special will show that when the number of speakers on each side of the referendum question and the airtime afforded to them are both taken into account.”

They also added that “… the programme gave an equitable and fair opportunity to both sides to express their views.”

RTE also confirmed that they had received complaints following the show.

The broadcaster said exact figures on complaints received about coverage of the campaign will be deferred until after polling day.

650,000 people tuned into the programme at some point last night.

The referendum on the eight amendment takes place on May 25.
