
Around 45,000 broadband customers in rural areas could be facing a price hike of around €180 in the not too distant future.
According to the Irish Independent, a subsidy which had been paid to Three by the government is due to expire soon. This will apparently lead to a slower service and a possible price hike of 75%.
Three have confirmed to the Irish Independent that they will be raising the cost of their broadband services in rural regions with the government scheme due to finish at the end of August.
The paper reports that the rural user will now face higher monthly bills for basic speed of under five megabits.
A National Broadband Plan with fibre broadband connections to over 1,000 rural towns and villages has been promised by the government but this will not be rolled out for another two years.
Breaking News is reporting that the counties most affected will be Galway, Mayo, Cork and Kerry.
