Second man arrested in connection with Ashling Murphy murder case

Breaking news.

A second man has been arrested by Gardaí investigating the murder of school teacher Ashling Murphy in Tullamore, Co Offaly.

The man, who is in his 30s, is being questioned in relation to the potential withholding of information.

In a statement, Gardaí said:

“An Garda Síochána have arrested a second male (30s) in connection with this investigation.  This male is detained at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act 1939 as amended, being questioned in relation to potential withholding of information contrary to The Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act 1998.

An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time.”

Gardaí have also confirmed that another man, who was arrested yesterday, remains in custody and is currently being questioned.

The man, who lives in Co. Offaly, is being detained at Tullamore Garda Station. He was arrested after being discharged from St James’s Hospital in Dublin yesterday morning.

He is currently being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, which allows for him to be held and questioned for up to 24 hours. A decision whether to charge or release him will be made today.

He will be asked about his whereabouts and movements on the day of the murder and on Thursday, before he was admitted to hospital.

Garda sources have said they have a substantial amount of evidence to put to the man, including forensic, DNA and witness evidence, RTÉ reports.
