There are major road delays in North Dublin due to a serious accident

The accident happened around 6.30am.

The Swords Rd is closed in Drumcondra near the Richmond Rd junction as emergency services deal with a serious incident.

The accident, which involved two vehicles, took place this morning around 6.30am.

A man in his 60s and a woman in her 30s – who were both the sole occupants of their vehicles – were fatally injured, according to gardai.

A spokesperson said:

“A technical and forensic examination of the scene is currently underway. Drumcondra Road Lower remains closed in both directions. Diversions are in place at Whitehall Church, Botanic Avenue and Richmond Rd. Buses and HGVs outbound are being diverted along Clonliffe Rd towards Ballybough.”

“Gardai are appealing to motorists with dashcams or anyone travelling on Drumcondra Rd Lower between 6.15am and 6.45am to contact Mountjoy Garda Station on 016668600 , the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111 or any Garda station.”

 

Dublin Bus said: “We wish to advise customers that due to a road traffic accident Drumcondra Road has been closed from the junction of Botanic Ave to Whitworth Rd. All routes to the city have been diverted via Griffith Ave, Mobhi Rd, Whitworth Rd, and back to normal route at Dorset Street.

“All routes from the city will divert via Whitworth Rd, Mobhi Rd and back on normal route at Griffith Ave.”

AA Roadwatch added: “The Swords Rd is closed in Drumcondra near the Richmond Rd jct as emergency services deal with a serious incident.”

“Inbound traffic is being diverted via Richmond Rd and Botanic Ave and outbound via St. Alphonsus’ Rd. Use an alternative route if you’re heading to Dublin Airport.”
