Simon Harris to consult officials today over abortion legislation

We made it through the weekend with a victory.

And now, according to RTÉ News, Minister for Health Simon Harris is to waste no time is talking about abortion legislation with officials.

The broadcaster reports that he wants to see how much time it will take until legislation could be published after the referendum at the weekend.

While the Bill could be finished before their summer break, it is more likely to be published during the Dáil recess in late July or August.

By then it is expected to move very quickly, with it being brought to the Seanad next September.

As well as the legislation, clinical guidelines will have to be created in conjunction with the new abortion laws.

Ireland officially voted to repeal the eighth amendment of the constitution at the weekend.

The law made abortion illegal in Ireland except where there was a real and substantial risk to the life of the mother.

66.4 percent of people voted ‘Yes’ to repeal the eighth amendment in yesterday’s referendum, with 33.6 percent voting ‘No’ to retain the amendment.

1,429,981 people voted to repeal the amendment.
