Six members of staff at Mayo’s Áras Attracta nursing home have appeared in court on assault charges today.

Five women and one man were formally charged at a sitting of Swinford District Court in Ballina this afternoon in connection with the assault of several residents at the Swinford home.

The shocking treatment of vulnerable residents at the facility was exposed in an RTÉ Prime Time Investigates documentary entitled Inside Bungalow Three, aired last December, with investigations launched by the HSE, HIQA and An Garda Síochána in the wake of the programme.

The disturbing footage showed three female residents at the Swinford home being slapped, dragged across the floor and verbally abused, with one 53-year-old woman with severe intellectual disabilities seen being struck by a worker and later told “If you died Ivy, I wouldn’t bring you to the toilet”.

The case returns to the court for mention in mid-July.
