Wednesday and Thursday could see snowfall in parts of the country.
If, for whatever reason, you have your heart set on a white February (not a thing) then you’re in luck, as Met Éireann has forecast a cold snap, bringing with it the chance of snow.
While the week will get off to a largely mild start in most places, the Irish Meteorological Service has said that those on higher ground in Connacht and Ulster could see snow on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Today will be mild with some rain, drizzle and fog clearing this morning. Highest temperatures will be between 10 and 13 degrees and northwestern coastal areas may expect fresh and gusty winds.
The mild weather will continue into the night with temperatures expecting to stay between 5 and 9 degrees.
Tomorrow will be a largely cloudy day with some outbreaks of rain and drizzle expected in south Connacht, north Munster and north Leinster. In Ulster and Connacht, highest temperatures will be between 6 and 9 degrees, but it will be slightly warmer – 9 to 13 degrees – elsewhere.
Temperatures are set to drop as we move in to Wednesday, and, as Met Éireann forecast, we may see snow and sleet on high ground in Ulster. Wednesday night will be chilly, with lowest temperatures of -1 to 3 degrees expected and frost developing in parts.
The cold snap will continue on Thursday and again, there are “further falls of sleet likely along with snow on high ground in Ulster”. There is also the chance of isolated thunderstorms.
On Thursday, highest temperatures will be between 5 and 8 degrees, though the weather will turn much colder overnight and drop to -3 to 1 degrees. Widespread frost will develop as well as icy conditions.
By the end of the week, the cold snap will start to lift. While Friday will get off to a cold, icy start, there will be sunshine in parts, as well as some scattered showers. Right now, the weekend is set to be wet and mild.
