Social welfare recipients will be able to earn extra money for milking
A new initiative will give dole recipients the chance to earn extra money by working on dairy farms.
Under the scheme, run by Teagasc, Animal Health Ireland and FRS network, anyone receiving social welfare payments will be eligible to apply for a two-day course in milking, according to Buzz.ie.
Those with the qualification from the course will then be able to earn up to €5,000 a year from milking without affecting their social welfare payments.
The course, costing €250, will run in Kilkenny and Waterford and will cover all aspects of milking routines, food safety and dairy cow health and welfare.
The scheme has been put together in response to the lack of milking staff available in the dairy sector.
