Katie McCabe makes history with Women’s Ballon d’Or nomination

Katie McCabe has made history yet again after being shortlisted for the Women’s Ballon d’Or.

The 27-year-old is now the first Irish woman to be nominated for the award and is one of 30 players taken into consideration. The 30 players include six members of the Spain women’s national team who won the World Cup this year. The prestigious Ballon d’Or award recognises the best player in the world over the period of a year. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the Dubin native wrote: "Getting the @UWCL win with @arsenalwfc and being nominated for the 2023 Ballon d’Or! Very proud to be nominated among the best in the world!! Blessed.” Katie currently plays for Arsenal at club level and is captain of the Republic of Ireland women’s national team, bringing the team to their first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup earlier this summer. This isn't the first time Katie has made history in the world of football as she scored the Republic of Ireland’s first ever goal in the World Cup, scoring in the fourth minute of their match against Canada.
