Storm Franklin to hit Ireland with more weather warnings issued

Katy Brennan

Severe winds and coastal flooding are forecast.

Ireland is set to be hit by Storm Franklin in the next 24 hours, with new weather warnings issued by Met Éireann.

It comes just days after Ireland was battered by Storm Eunice.

The first Status Orange warning is for Clare and will remain in place from 12:00 pm today until midnight on Monday.

A second Status Orange wind warning has been issued for Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo, lasting from 11pm tonight until 7am tomorrow.

Met Eireann said: “Storm Franklin will cause gale force westerly winds with severe and damaging gusts. These winds combined with very high seas will lead to wave overtopping, which may result in coastal flooding.”

A Met Eireann spokesperson has warned of the risk of more falling trees and potential power cuts, as some structures will have already been weakened by Storm Eunice.

People are urged to stay clear of the Atlantic coastline due to dangerous conditions.

A Status Yellow wind warning has also been issued for the rest of the country. It will be in place from 9:00am today until 9:00am Monday.

“Very strong southwesterly winds and some severe gusts are expected later on Sunday morning, veering west to northwest on Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning,” Met Eireann say.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow rain warning remains in place today for five counties – Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo – until 6pm this evening.

Strong winds are forecast for today, with persistent and heavy rain leading to localised flooding.

Tonight will be “very windy tonight with strong to near gale force west to northwest winds reaching gale force in the west and north with severe gusts and very high seas leading to coastal flooding”.

Heavy showers will also continue, some with hail and some will fall as sleet or snow. Temperatures will be as low as 1 to 4 degrees, turning less cold into the morning.

Northern Ireland is also set to experience very heavy winds in the next few days as Storm Franklin hits.
