A stray cat has become the prime suspect in an attempted murder case in Japan.

Elderly woman, Mayuko Matsumoto, was found by her daughter in her bed with over 20 “severe” cuts to her face.

Local Japanese broadcaster RKK has reported that police launched an attempted murder investigation due to the severity of the wounds.

Matsumoto’s daughter told the broadcaster:

“When we found her, blood covered everything above her chin.

“Her face was soaked in blood. I didn’t know what had happened.”

After the 82-year-old woman, who is bedridden and unable to speak, received medical attention, police began turning their attention to potential suspects.

According to local newspaper Nishinippon Shimbun, authorities believe the wounds may have been caused by a stray cat wandering the area.

The report also stated that police found “traces of blood” on one of the stray cats in Matsumoto’s house.

The case is ongoing.
