Introduced a few years ago, the Additional Needs Payment can help cover expenses that individuals or families cannot afford from their income.
In 2023, more than 5,800 payments were made, costing nearly €3 million, according to Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys.
Speaking in the Dáil, Minister Humphreys said: "Under the supplementary welfare allowance scheme, my Department may also make Additional Needs Payments to help meet expenses that a person cannot pay from their weekly income.
"Over 5,800 additional needs payments were made in 2023 to assist with household bills and heating costs."
The Additional Needs Payment is designed to help those struggling with unexpected or unmanageable costs.
It’s available to people receiving a social welfare payment or those working on a low income, regardless of the number of hours they work.
Even if you’re not receiving other welfare benefits, you may still qualify for this support, depending on your financial situation.
