Meriam Ibrahim could be released from death row in Sudan within days, according to reports.
A senior official allegedly
told the BBC that she will be freed following worldwide protests about her treatment after she was sentenced to death for marrying a Christian.
Ms Ibrahim was raised by a Christian by her mother but the court ruled earlier this month that she is Muslim because that was her father’s faith.
Because of this her Christian marriage was annulled in Sudan and she was sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery because the union wasn't recognised under Islamic law and death by hanging.
Last week, Ms Ibrahim gave birth to a daughter in her prison cell - which is her second child from her marriage in 2011 to Daniel Wani, who is a US citizen.
"We are aware of and urgently seeking clarification from the Sudanese authorities of reports that Meriam Ibrahim, the mother facing the death penalty in Sudan, is to be freed” a Foreign Office spokeswoman
said.
"We have been strongly urging the government of the Republic of Sudan to do all it can to overturn its decision to sentence her to death”.
Lawyers for the 27-year-old however expressed scepticism that she would be freed so quickly.
“It’s a statement to silence the international media,”
said Elshareef Ali Mohammed. “This is what the government does. We will not believe that she is being freed until she walks out of the prison".
