It was confirmed today that taxi fares in Ireland will rise by 3.22 percent. But what is the reason for this? And what will it mean for us in the future?

Well, to get started, the National Transport Authority announced last July that fares would rise after a review of the costs of operating a taxi.

An inquiry found that running a taxi (which includes petrol or diesel and the upkeep of the car) has rose by 3.22 percent since 2015, and because of this, fares would rise accordingly.

So now, if you hail a taxi during standard hours, it will cost you €3.80 instead of €3.60, and during peak hours it will go up from €4 to €4.20.

This comes after the app MyTaxi decided to add a €2 booking fee at the end of last year.

At the time, a spokesperson for the company said that the fee “is an industry-standard fee charged by all taxi providers in Ireland.”

Better start putting away some money for your transport home… it seems like it’s only going to rise further.
