A Canadian teenager has been shot and killed in a row over a lost iPhone.

The tragic incident took place after Jeremy Cook (18) left his phone in a taxi last week and used a tracking app to find out the location of the device.

On arriving with a relative at the address in Ontario where the phone was located, it’s understood that the pair were confronted by three men in a car.

The car then began to drive away, prompting Cook to grab the door on the driver’s side of the car.

MISSISSAUGA - MARCH 21 - Peel Police and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) investigate a scene in Mississauga where one person is dead and two police officers injured after an altercation of some kind occurred overnight. Police tape marks off a large segment of the townhouses on March 21, 2015.

However, the men then opened fire and the teenager sustained several fatal gunshot wounds.

Police have said that Cook had no connection to his attacker and have now launched a manhunt for the three men involved.

“It’s certainly extreme. No one ever would have predicted or even thought that a loss of life would have resulted from a loss of a phone,” London Police Const. Ken Steeves told The Canadian Press.

“The app itself is a great tool to have. Nobody could ever predict that what occurred was going to occur in that case. But if you suspect there’s any potential for violence at all, we certainly encourage people to contact police.”
