Terrorism in Ireland – the government tells us that we’re not immune

Carl Kinsella

Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan has spoken about the prospects of a terrorist attack in Ireland in the aftermath of attacks in Manchester and London.

Speaking to RTÉ this morning, the Fine Gael TD said that there was no evidence to suggest an upcoming attack on Irish soil.

“We don’t have any direct evidence of any threat here for Ireland in terms of our national security but, of course, we’re by no means immune, we’re by no means exempt. Our threat level is currently moderate.”

Mr Flanagan also provided reassurances that Gardaí are vigilant to any threat. He said he was “absolutely confident that the Garda Síochána, at every level, are fully in control of the situation here, the sharing of the intelligence internationally and obviously securing the State here from a national perspective”.

The remarks followed a tweet by outgoing Taoiseach Enda Kenny that read: “Terrible news coming from London – we stand with our close neighbours again tonight.”

Kenny said that the Irish embassy in the UK was monitoring the situation, but it is not believe that any Irish were injured in the attacks.
